Digging Deep to Strengthen Denver's Urban Forest

The Park People's mission to work with communities to plant trees and improve parks for a healthy, resilient future ensures that all Denver residents have access to the wonderful benefits of parks and trees. To accomplish this necessary and meaningful work, The Park People works with a diverse set of community groups. One of our programs, Mile High Tree Champions, engages local community members in a half-day of tree planting and/or park improvement projects. The Park People is so excited to host a Mile High Tree Champions event Saturday, September 17th at Columbine Homes, a Denver Housing Authority community.

Retraining a Tree with Basal Shoots

We've been experiencing a lot of hot temperatures that can be affecting Denver's trees. Do you think the top of your tree has died? Here are some signs that may be the case: brittle branches, no signs of buds or leaves, breakage, and discoloration.

If the tree has basal shoots coming out from the bottom of the trunk, there may be hope for it yet! Retraining may be a good way to save the tree. This process alters which branch is leading the growth at the top of the tree, replacing what has died with a strong, more viable branch.

But first, let's start at the beginning. Read this blog for a How-To on retraining a tree.

How Much Water Does Your Tree Need?

Read here to learn more about your tree's water needs. It’s that time of year when you sit out on your patio and smell the neighbor’s sprinklers as they rotate back and forth across the grass, hitting the fence and sometimes the street. Irrigation systems are an enormous timesaver and are often the make it or break it element to thriving landscapes in Denver. But are they delivering enough water to your trees? And if you don’t have one, how much water should you be giving those trees? We've got tips for several watering methods, including hose, bucket, drip irrigation, and spray irrigation. Remember, watering trees is an investment. The shade trees provide decreases water loss to evaporation,  more so than the amount of water required to keep them healthy. Plus, if you're willing to go the extra mile, trees can be watered with recycled or already used water. Check out this blog to learn more
