Submit a Request
How Park Legacy Works and FAQs
All requests must be submitted by January 31st for Spring Tribute Trees or by July 31st for Fall Tribute Trees. Tribute Paver requests are accepted on a rolling basis.
To select a tree, use Denver’s TreeKeeper inventory system. You can enter a park into the search bar or just pan around the map to find a location you like. Trees may only be planted in available sites on parks – these are indicated by blue dots. Click on the dot to confirm the site is plantable and note the Site ID. You’ll need this to tell us your preferred sites! Choose at least three since the website is not always up to date and sometimes sites are not in an irrigated area, which we don’t recommend for best chance of survival.
No, your specific requests are not guaranteed upon submission of the request form. Species must align with a Park’s general Master Plan and therefore must be confirmed by Denver Forestry. Planting sites might become available/unavailable due to construction or other factors, so your site request cannot be guaranteed unless it has been discussed with Forestry already. If you are set on a species or site ID, please reach out to Brenda@theparkpeople.org for more information. The Park People and Denver Forestry will work with you to make recommendations and offer alternate options if your species and/or site ID cannot be approved.
Tribute Trees are planted in March and October, depending on weather. As the beginning of March and October approaches, we will determine the best planting time and will send out notifications as soon as possible.
No, we will not transplant your tree after it has been planted. This is in order to best promote the survival of the tree. If you have questions about the sites, it is your responsibility to visit your site ID requests and/or ask questions before planting occurs.
We try to ensure that the right tree is planted in the right place to give each tree the best opportunity to thrive. However, should a Tribute Tree not survive, we will replace the tree at no cost for the first three years. We strongly advise choosing a site with irrigation. You can’t tell this through TreeKeeper – we’ll have to verify if for you – another reason to choose a few sites you’d be happy with!
Because of theft, vandalism, and tree maintenance, it is against park policy to install plaques or memorial markers. However, your tree will be marked with a temporary tree tag for its first few years. You will also receive a Tree Certificate in the mail after planting has occurred.
Due to safety concerns and park policy, participation in tree planting and paver installation is limited. Upon request, mulch can be left next to the tree for family and friends to use to complete the planting as part of a ceremony. The mulch must be spread no later than the weekend after the tree has been planted.
Pavers are installed 2-4x per year. They are installed each March and October in conjunction with Tribute Tree planting, and again 1-2x during the summer, depending on volume. Once they’re installed, you can find them in the Hazel Gates Woodruff Shade Garden just behind the Eugene Field House, a historic cottage in Washington Park (715 S. Franklin St.).
